(Migrated) install redis on vm on osx

(This message has been automatically imported from the retired mailing list)

I just installed zato on my mac using virtual box and vagrant and am going
thru the tutorial.

One of earlier steps in the tutorial asks to install redis. But without
root (since zato user does not have sudo privelages), how do I install
redis in vm?

You get root inside your vm using “sudo”. e.g. if your VM is Ubuntu or
Debian:

sudo apt-get install redis

I am aware of sudo command but zato user in not in sudoers file. So I
cannot be root user user zato user credentials.

I got Vagarantfile from https://zato.io/downloads-2.0-osx.html

So login with a different user who does have sudoers rights.

What Vagrantfile did you build this VM from?

If there’s a Vagrantfile specific to Zato then it’s incomplete if it
doesn’t include redis. If it’s a generic Vagrantfile then you can login
with whatever generic user it provides.

Rafal is right. I ran into the issue where zato does not like version 2.2.12 of redis. I will need to install version 2.8 from source on this Ubuntu precise. I will update you soon on how that goes.

I would have thought

sudo apt-get install redis-server

would be sufficient. At least under ubuntu 14.04, there is no need to
install redis from source.

Ubuntu Precise, on which our Vagrant box for OS X is build, has only
Redis 2.2.12 in official repositories, while Zato requires at least
version 2.8.4. That’s why I suggested installing Redis from source.

You’re right, though. Installing Redis on Ubuntu Trusty is much more
convenient. Soon we will release the Vagrantifile with Ubuntu 14.04.

I am able to proceed with the tutorial. Thanks for all the help.
